Today’s gospel song is “Where Could I Go.” The writer is J.B. Coats (1901-1961), who served his local church as a deacon for 30 years before being called into the ministry.
He was a native of Mississippi and studied at Mississippi Southern College and Louisiana State University. He began teaching music and working in evangelism at the age of 14. He was a public school teacher. He wrote many songs, but this one was the most widely recognized.
WHERE COULD I GO
J. B. Coats
circa 1931
Living below in this old sinful world
Hardly a comfort can afford
Striving alone to face temptation so
Now won’t you tell me
Where could I go but to the Lord
Where could I go oh where could I go
Seeking the refuge for my soul
Needing a friend to save me in the end
Won’t you tell me
Where could I go but to the Lord
Life here is grand with friends I love so dear
Comfort I get from God’s own word
Yet when I face that chilling hand of death
Won’t you tell me
Where could I go but to the Lord
Where could I go oh where could I go
Seeking the refuge for my soul
Needing a friend to save me in the end
Won’t you tell me
Where could I go but to the Lord.
