Lunar or Looney?

He’s “looney tunes!” Ever hear (or say) that? What does it mean? It is a slang way of saying that someone’s behavior is erratic. It is a phrase adopted from the cartoons by that name that were produced from 1930 through 1969. You know the ones I mean: Porky Pig, Bugs Bunny, and a host of other characters.
How did the name of a cartoon series become a description of a mentally ill person? Well, fullmoon.jpgit evolved from the word, “lunatic,” which came from the word, “lunar,” which refers to the moon. It all came from the assumption that a full moon brings out the craziness in the world. Doubtless the belief began in the Middle Ages with the werewolf fantasy that people turned into wolves during a full moon
Many people believe that aberrant behavior is much more common on the night of a full moon than at other times. Very thorough scientific studies, done with open minds, have failed to show any correlation.
The current full moon has been hailed as a “supermoon.” The orbit of the moon brings it closer to the earth than it has been since 1948–68 years ago. It appears to be larger than it usually is, and that’s about it. Expect no apocalyptic events or even a rash of criminal acts. It’s just the way it is, and has been for a long, long time.
Don’t blame the moon for sin and crime. The real reason is in the hearts and minds of people. The first science was astronomy; the most recent is psychology. First we studied the heavens. After a long time, we finally got around to studying ourselves.
Fortunately for us all, God has provided a way for us to gain the victory over sin. He sent His Son to save us and give us a new beginning in life. “If any person is in Christ, he/she is a new creation” is the message of the New Testament. The Holy Spirit lives within the believer, guiding his/her decisions and actions. The moon does not control us. Instead, the Lord guides us.
