September 3, 2016 (Saturday)
During my first pastorate, 1951-1953, making the 50-mile trip from Waco to Oletha on Sunday mornings, I listened in the car to Norvell Slater’s “Hymns We Love” program on WFAA radio, Dallas. He sometimes played songs by J.T. Adams and his “The Men from Texas” choir. One that was repeated from time to time was “Dear Lord, Remember Me.” I loved hearing it as I drove the sandy roads to pick up a few children for Sunday School.
I also heard this song back on campus when John D. (Smiley) McCallon, a student from Pharr, Texas, sang it with the Baylor Religious Hour Choir. Whenever it was announced that he was going to sing this song, everyone sat up to listen.
Myrtle Jackson I won’t mind how dark and drear my way may be I won’t mind the cross to bear For I know in God’s own time he’ll set me free But this I pray dear Lord remember me Remember me when tears are falling down Remember me when there’s trouble all around And, Oh down at the river of Jordan When calling the roll oh Lord remember me I won’t mind though I may go through waters deep Still his own my prayer shall be I decided come what may I’ll follow Thee But this I pray dear Lord remember me Remember me when tears are falling down Remember me when there’s trouble all around And, Oh down at the river of Jordan When calling the roll oh Lord remember me |
