Suppertime

Yesterday’s blog was about Ira Stanphill, writer of more than 500 gospel songs. Today we feature another of his great songs, “Suppertime.” Many of us can identify with this song, because it reminds us of our own childhood experiences. I remember playing with the neighborhood kids until Mother called me in for supper. That was during the years when I was 5-8 years old. Sadly, soon after that my parents divorced. At my grandmother’s house, where we lived for several years, all the meals were home made and on the table right on time every day. Her biscuits were big and tasty. My grandfather always bragged on them, but she would then apologize for their not being so good that day. They were always good. Getting back to the songwriter, if you have not yet read the Wikipedia article about Ira Stanphill, you will find it interesting if you do. What a tremendously good writer of gospel songs he was.

SUPPERTIME
Ira Stanphill
1950

Chorus:
Come home, come home
it’s supper time
the shadows lengthen fast.
Come home, come home,
it’s supper time
we’re going home at last.
Verses:
When I was but a boy in days of childhood
I used to play till evening shadows come.
Then winding down an old familiar pathway
I heard my mother call at set of sun
One day beside her bedside I was kneeling,
and angel wings were winnowing through the air.
She heard her call for supper time in heaven
and now I know she’s waiting for me there.
In visions now I see her standing yonder,
and her familiar voice I hear once more.
The banquet table’s ready up in heaven,
It’s supper time upon that golden shore.
