Roses are Beautiful

Theme for the week: Lessons from Roses

February 15, 2022 (Tuesday)

There are between 250,000 and 400,000 types of flowers in our world. Among these are over 150 species of roses in the genus and thousands of cultivated hybrids. There are so many different types of roses! The one thing they have in common, it seems to me, is their beauty.

In keeping with our theme for the week, “Lessons from Roses,” we can confidently state, “Roses are beautiful!”

Now, if we compare people to roses, what can we say about a person who is “mighty like a rose?” That person is “beautiful.” What do we mean by that?

Of course, the obvious reason to describe a person as “beautiful” is their appearance. We have our ideas about what makes a person beautiful or handsome. One expression that we use when trying to describe a truly outstanding person is, “beautiful on the outside, beautiful on the inside.”

What do we mean when we say a person is beautiful on the inside? When asked this question the top five answers were confidence, kindness, happiness, dignity and intelligence.

Do you know someone like this? Perhaps you are such a person. If so, just thank the Lord for making you a blessing to others and go on living your life. As the sergeant tells his troops, “As you were.” The truly good people that we meet along life’s way are not trying to impress others; they are merely living their lives in such a way that it blesses others.

Are you beautiful inside and out?

OH! TO BE LIKE THEE
Words, Thomas O. Chisholm
Music, William J. Kirkpatrick
1897

Oh! to be like Thee, blessed Redeemer,
This is my constant longing and prayer;
Gladly I’ll forfeit all of earth’s treasures,
Jesus, Thy perfect likeness to wear.

Refrain:
Oh! to be like Thee, oh! to be like Thee,
Blessed Redeemer, pure as Thou art;
Come in Thy sweetness, come in Thy fullness;
Stamp Thine own image deep on my heart.

Oh! to be like Thee, full of compassion,
Loving, forgiving, tender and kind,
Helping the helpless, cheering the fainting,
Seeking the wand’ring sinner to find.
Refrain

Oh! to be like Thee, lowly in spirit,
Holy and harmless, patient and brave;
Meekly enduring cruel reproaches,
Willing to suffer, others to save.
Refrain

Oh! to be like Thee, Lord, I am coming,
Now to receive th’ anointing divine;
All that I am and have I am bringing,
Lord, from this moment all shall be Thine.
Refrain

Oh! to be like Thee, while I am pleading,
Pour out Thy Spirit, fill with Thy love,
Make me a temple meet for Thy dwelling,
Fit me for life and Heaven above.
Refrain
