Days Gone By

Yesterday’s blog about pictures at our house reminded me of the wonderful collage of church members created by Laura Groseclose when Wanda and I retired 20 years ago.
Click here to see it. Whenever I look at it I marvel again at the tremendous amount of work that went into its assembly and construction. Thanks again, Laura. See anyone you know?
Here’s a picture of the congregation in February, 1967 during a revival meeting with Larry Taylor, evangelist. That is I with him. We are crowding out the pictures of the congregation. Perhaps you recognize someone, but that was nearly 50 years ago.

There were 97 professions of faith that week, and I baptized 47 people in one long baptism service at the end of the meeting.
People have come and gone during the 143 years that the First Baptist Church of Rockport has served the Lord and this community. I remember when we celebrated our Centennial in 1973. The city of Rockport had celebrated the previous year. God has blessed the church through the years. I am thankful for the years that I had the privilege of serving, and grateful that the church has honored me by naming me Pastor Emeritus. I’m thankful for all the pastors the church has had. I knew personally the two that preceded me (Wilson Brumley and W. D. Broadway) and have had the honor of friendship with the two that have come since my retirement (Walter Knight and Scott Jones). God continues to provide dedicated leaders and faithful co-workers in this wonderful church.
In the meantime, He has blessed me with the opportunity of service at the Bethel Baptist Church in Ingleside. For this I am very thankful.
