It was the summer of 1948 when a city-wide Youth Revival was held in the old Houston Coliseum. The leading youth speakers of that era took turns preaching. One night it was Buckner Fanning, the next, Howard E. Butt, Jr., the next, Warren Hultgren, and so on through the week. Theme for the week was, “Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus.”
A few weeks later our church, the Liberty Road Baptist Church, had its own Youth Revival with T. J. Harrison as the speaker. Theme for our week was the same as the city-wide crusade: “Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus.”
In both of those meetings we sang “Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus” every night. Not a bad idea for us in these difficult days as we long for our own personal spiritual awakening.
Abandoned by her husband when she became blind, Helen Lemmel faced many other troubles and heartaches. In the midst of her trials, she found comfort in composing this wonderful hymn. |
Helen H. Lemmel 1924 O soul, are you weary and troubled? No light in the darkness you see? There’s light for a look at the Savior, And life more abundant and free. Turn your eyes upon Jesus, Look full in His wonderful face, And the things of earth will grow strangely dim, In the light of His glory and grace. Through death into life everlasting He passed, and we follow Him there; O’er us sin no more hath dominion For more than conqu’rors we are! Turn your eyes upon Jesus, Look full in His wonderful face, And the things of earth will grow strangely dim, In the light of His glory and grace. His Word shall not fail you, He promised; Believe Him and all will be well; Then go to a world that is dying, His perfect salvation to tell! Turn your eyes upon Jesus, Look full in His wonderful face, And the things of earth will grow strangely dim, In the light of His glory and grace. |
