Music in the Head

Several of my blogs have featured the phrase, “a song in my head.” I wake up in the morning and a song (never the same one as the day before) is sounding off in my head. It won’t let go. I can’t silence it. So I write about it.
The Wall Street Journal is now reporting on a book that predicts that phenomenon will exist by the year 2040 in the heads of those who desire it. musichead.jpgPeople will have chips implanted in their heads, according to this futuristic author, that will not only play standard music at will, but will create new music whenever you like. It will use the “think method” (remember that from “The Music Man?”). Of course, the chip will affect much more than music. It literally will be a computer in your brain (which already is a computer itself, right?).
I like much science fiction. It creates a world unlike any we will ever actually know in our daily lives. The movie, “Star Wars,” was probably the catalyst that created an entirely new world of fiction dealing with the future. Until then, special effects in movies was present, but for the most part was not very convincing. Star Wars changed that and, for all practical purposes, made it real. Through the use of computer graphics a new movie creates an earthquake so authentic you would swear it’s the real thing.
A computer in our head? Music truly on demand, the way we like it, playing only the good parts if that’s what we want. And no one to yell at the listener, “Turn that music down!” because it’s all in the head. Perhaps that’s one of its weaknesses: it can’t be shared. I’m sure the inventors will come up with a way to get around that barrier to corporate enjoyment. You may peek into a room where people are dancing to music that exists only in their heads. Presto, we’re back to silent movies. But not really. The music is there, but only those equipped to hear it can do so.
I can hardly wait (he says with a sarcastic sneer). Come to think of it–the year
2040? No way. At 109, I’ll have other things on my mind:

I woke up this morning feeling fine
I woke up with heaven on my mind
I woke up with joy in my soul
Cause I knew my Lord had control
I knew I was walkin’ in the light
Cause I’d been on my knees in the night
And I’d pray till the Lord gave a sign
And now I’m feeling mighty fine
Well I’m feeling mighty fine I’ve got heaven on my mind
Don’t you know I want to go where the milk and honey flow
There’s a light that always shines down inside this heart of mine
I’ve got heaven on my mind and I’m feeling mighty fine
We’re walking with Jesus all the time
We’re walking and talking as we climb
We’re traveling a road to the sky
Where I know I’ll live when I die
He’s been telling me all about that land
And he tells me that everything is grand
And he says that a home will be mine
And now I’m feeling mighty fine
Oh I’m feeling mighty fine…
Oh I’m feeling mighty fine…
