Jesus was a story teller. The Bible calls his stories, “parables,” which means “an earthly story with a heavenly meaning.” Jesus life was quite a story itself. Another hymn carries the title, “Tell Me the Story of Jesus.” The hymn for today quotes what children might say after hearing stories of the life of Jesus. Several of the incidents in the life of Jesus are mentioned in this hymn. Children speak in this song, asking to hear the stories about Jesus once again. Not only children, but adults love to hear the story of Jesus over and over. One of our favorite hymns has these words in it: “And when in scenes of glory I sing the new, new song, ’twill be the old, old story that I have loved so long.”
TELL ME THE STORIES OF JESUS
Author: William H. Parker
Tune: Frederic A. Challinor,
1885
Tell me the stories of Jesus I love to hear;
Things I would ask Him to tell me if He were here;
Scenes by the wayside, tales of the sea,
Stories of Jesus, tell them to me.
First let me hear how the children stood round His knee,
And I shall fancy His blessing resting on me;
Words full of kindness, deeds full of grace,
All in the love light of Jesus’ face.
Tell me, in accents of wonder, how rolled the sea,
Tossing the boat in a tempest on Galilee;
And how the Maker, ready and kind,
Chided the billows, and hushed the wind.
Show me that scene in the garden, of bitter pain;
Show me the cross where my Savior for me was slain;
Sad ones or bright ones, so that they be
Stories of Jesus—tell them to me.
Into the city I’d follow the children’s band,
Waving a branch of the palm tree high in my hand;
One of His heralds, yes, I would sing
Loudest hosannas, “Jesus is King!”
