The song, “A Beautiful Life,” reminds me of a “wish list” of all the deeds I would love to do for others. I would love to help those in need, to have a good influence on others, to let the light of Christ shine through me, to sing praises to the Lord, to help troubled souls, to live a kind, good and pure life, to take my stand with God’s love, to lend a helping hand, to help the sick, poor and weak, to speak kindness to the suffering, and to lift the loads of others.
A shortened version of the list above would read, “To be like Jesus.” Let us remember what Jesus told us: “Let your light so shine among men that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in Heaven.”
As a reminder to myself, I will remember that I may have just a few more days before I go to a place where there is no setting sun, to meet the deeds that I have done, hoping to hear Jesus say, “Well done, good and faithful servant.”
A BEAUTIFUL LIFE
William M. Golden
1918
Each day I’ll do a golden deed,
By helping those who are in need;
My life on earth is but a span,
And so I’ll do the best I can.
Refrain:
Life’s evening sun is sinking low,
A few more days, and I must go
To meet the deeds that I have done,
Where there will be no setting sun.
To be a child of God each day,
My light must shine along the way;
I’ll sing His praise while ages roll,
And strive to help some troubled soul.
Refrain
The only life that will endure,
Is one that’s kind and good and pure;
And so for God I’ll take my stand,
Each day I’ll lend a helping hand.
Refrain
I’ll help someone in time of need,
And journey on with rapid speed;
I’ll help the sick and poor and weak,
And words of kindness to them speak.
Refrain
While going down life’s weary road,
I’ll try to lift some trav’ler’s load;
I’ll try to turn the night to day,
Make flowers bloom along the way.
