Meaning and Purpose

I recently saw an episode of the old Dick Cavett show, in which he interviewed Groucho Marx. In addition to the stage performances, radio programs, and movies Groucho and his brothers made through the years, he hosted a quiz show on television from 1950 through 1961. money.jpgWhen he was asked if he would like to run for governor of California, he declined because he was making so much more money as quiz show host. During the Cavett interview, Groucho said the governor’s job paid $30,000 per year, but he was making $16,000 per week as TV host of a quiz show. Let’s see..for 52 weeks, that’s $832,000 per year, almost 28 times as much as the governor. No comparison.
Can you think of other situations in which salaries far exceed reasonable compensation?
There are many. I’m not complaining or criticizing, just observing.
Now, if money is the only object of one’s vocation in life, then aiming for the highest paying position is perfectly understandable. But if a person is living for a different purpose, his choice of job or profession will be based on other considerations.
The dedicated Christian asks himself/herself, “What does God want me to do?” All other factors fade in light of this serious question. The will of God is all-important to the person whose life is built upon faith. This is not only essential for the choice of life’s work, but for anything and everything in the Christian’s life. Jesus said his mission was to accomplish the will of the One who sent Him. He also said, “As the Father has sent me, so send I you.”

Living for Jesus, a life that is true,
Striving to please Him in all that I do;
Yielding allegiance, glad-hearted and free,
This is the pathway of blessing for me.
O Jesus, Lord and Savior, I give myself to Thee,
For Thou, in Thy atonement, didst give Thyself for me;
I own no other Master, my heart shall be Thy throne;
My life I give, henceforth to live, O Christ, for Thee alone.
(Hymn by Thomas O. Chisholm, 1917)
