Hymns About Philippians 2:5-11

In Tuesday’s blog, we suggested reading Philippians 2:5-11 in several versions for maximum enjoyment of portions of an ancient hymn. Here is the NIV version:

In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus: who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death–even death on a cross! Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Today, I am going to suggest nine hymns you may know (or not) that are based upon lines from Philippians 2:5-11. Here goes:
being in very nature God

HOLY, HOLY, HOLY

Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty!
Early in the morning our song shall rise to Thee;
Holy, holy, holy, merciful and mighty!
God in three Persons, blessed Trinity!

did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage

THOU DIDST LEAVE THY THRONE

Thou didst leave thy throne and thy kingly crown
When thou camest to earth for me
But in Bethlehem’s home was there found no room
For thy holy nativity.

rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant,

OH LOVE, HOW DEEP, HOW BROAD, HOW HIGH

For us he prayed; for us he taught;
for us his daily works he wrought:
by words and signs and actions thus
still seeking not himself, but us.

being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man,

O COME ALL YE FAITHFUL

All Hail! Lord, we greet Thee,
Born this happy morning,
O Jesus! for evermore be Thy name adored.
Word of the Father, now in flesh appearing;
O come, let us adore Him,
Christ the Lord.

he humbled himself by becoming obedient

‘NEATH THE OLD OLIVE TREES

‘Neath the old olive trees,
‘Neath the old olive trees,
Went the Savior alone on His knees:
“Not My will, Thine be done,”
Cried the Father’s own Son,
As He knelt ‘neath the old olive trees.

to death–even death on a cross!

VICTORY IN JESUS

I heard an old, old story
How Jesus came from glory
How He gave His life on Calvary
To save a wretch like me.

Therefore God exalted him to the highest place

WORTHY IS THE LAMB

Worthy is the lamb
Who has been slain,
To receive power and riches
And wisdom and strength
And honor and glory and blessing.

gave him the name that is above every name,

JESUS IS THE SWEETEST NAME I KNOW

There is no name in earth or Heav’n above,
That we should give such honor and such love
As the blessèd name, let us all acclaim,
That wondrous, glorious name of Jesus.
Jesus is the sweetest name I know,
And He’s just the same as His lovely name,
And that’s the reason why I love Him so;
Oh, Jesus is the sweetest name I know.

at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth,

HOW GREAT THOU ART

Then sings my soul, my Savior, God, to Thee
How great thou art, how great thou art!
