Summertime

June 1, 2021 (Tuesday)

In 2021, the June solstice happens on Sunday, June 20, at 11:32 P.M. EDT. This date marks the official beginning of summer in the Northern Hemisphere, as far as science is concerned. Never mind that. Summer has already begun, as the Rockport beach and beaches around the country were filled with people this past weekend, the unofficial start of summer. This is the time of year that George Gershwin wrote about in Porgy and Bess: “Summertime, and the livin’ is easy, fish are jumpin’ and the cotton is high..”

Here’s a little fun poem that I just composed as I was writing this blog:

FOLOWING THE WARMTH

No more snow days, no more ice,
Summer days are very nice.
But down in Argentina the cold winds blow
As the people down there get ready for snow.

If I were a rich man and could go where I please
I’d travel to the warm spots with greatest of ease,
We may need the cold to balance the weather
But I would stay warm forever and ever.

On the other hand, a Christian should be a person for all seasons in things that are much more important than our creature comforts. Carol King’s song reminds us of this:

You just call out my name
And you know wherever I am
I’ll come running, to see you again
Winter, spring, summer or fall
All you have to do is call
And I’ll be there
You’ve got a friend

Randy Newman gave us some great music in the Toy Story series of movies. “You’ve got a friend in me” is the kind of song that makes you feel good. The presentation below by Claire Ryann and her daddy touches my heart.

You’ve got a friend in me, You’ve got a friend in me
When the road looks rough ahead
And you’re miles and miles from your nice warm bed
Just remember what your old pal said
You’ve got a friend in me, You’ve got a friend in me.

You’ve got a friend in me, you’ve got a friend in me
You’ve got troubles, well I’ve got ’em too
There isn’t anything I wouldn’t do for you
We stick together and we see it through
You’ve got a friend in me, you’ve got a friend in me.

Some other folks might be a little bit smarter than I am
Bigger and stronger too maybe
But none of them will ever love you the way I do
It’s me and you.
And as the years go by, our friendship will never die
You’re gonna see it’s our destiny, you’ve got a friend in me
You’ve got a friend in me, you’ve got a friend in me
