The State Fair of Texas is held every year in October at the State Fair Grounds in Dallas, Texas. But was it always held there? No. The very first state fair of Texas was held in Corpus Christi, Texas, in May, 1852. That’s a long time ago, dear friends–twenty years or so before Rockport was founded.
I learned that by stumbling upon a very interesting web site about Texas. Virtually everything in it is copyrighted, but nothing prevents my telling you about the site so that you can look at it yourself, and learn a lot of things about Texas you may not have known. It’s called, “Lone Star Junction: A Texas and Texas History Resource.” *
You know that Texas has a state bird (Mockingbird), but did you know we have a state insect? Yes, we do. It’s the Monarch Butterfly. That’s another thing I learned by navigating to Lone Star Junction.
Did you know that the largest set (640) of baseball cards ever produced in history was published in Texas in 1910? That’s only one of a fantastic number of items discussed at this site. Whether you are a native-born or adopted Texan, you will enjoy it. It includes trivial stuff as well as the monumentally important.
Texas is one of 50 great states. The United States of America is a land of opportunity. Millions of people around the world want to come here to live. Freedom is the key word that describes America, and freedom is what everyone in the world wants. It is still true in this country that you can become what you dream of becoming.
