Today I saw those kids I’ve known,
The ones that used to play with glee,
They’re all grown up ’cause time has flown,
And didn’t wait for me.
“Hey there, son, where have you been?”
I asked with great simplicity,
He said “Lots of places around the world.
Come, meet my family.
Here is John, he’s my son
He’s married now, you know,
And here’s his son, his name is John,
A ‘Junior’ and we love him so.”
“Glad to meet you, John, and you, too, John,”
I gasped and breathed a sigh,
Three generations are here today,
When did all the years go by?
“And,” old John said,”Here is Baby John,”
“He’s my great grand son.”
“Wow,” I whispered, “Now there’s four,
I remember when you were only one.”
“Pay attention, Pop,” great grandpa cried,
“The years are quickly passin’,
If you plan to make your mark in time,
You better be ‘up and at ’em.'”
Well, if they are old, I must be older,
I was there at old John’s birth,
Let’s see now, how old am I?,
One of the oldest guys on earth.
Looking back, the time seems short,
But I grew old along with the rest,
But one thing I know without a doubt,
I surely have been blessed.
