A recurrent phrase I hear as I watch television drama is, “Didn’t see that coming!”
Life is like that, isn’t it? The unexpected happens.
Perhaps we will be somewhat prepared for such things if we take to heart the words of Scripture: “Do not boast about tomorrow, for you do not know what a day may bring” (Proverbs 27:1 NIV).
When it’s an unwelcome experience, we are frustrated and tempted to feel sorry for ourselves, but when it’s a delightful surprise we call it “serindipity,” an experience in which we are “surprised by joy.” We much prefer to be surprised by something that makes us happy.
Life is so ordered, however, that we must adjust to whatever comes our way. The apostle Paul set the example for us, when he wrote, ” I have learned to be content in whatever circumstances I am. I know how to get along with humble means, and I also know how to live in prosperity; in any and every circumstance I have learned the secret of being filled and going hungry, both of having abundance and suffering need….” (Philippians 4:11-12 NIV).
From “The Sound of Music” comes a delightful song that begins: “What will this day be like, I wonder. What will my future be, I wonder.” Today’s date is September 9, 2013. Make it a great day!
