The News and God

Musings about the news reports these days

The open challenges to the clear teachings of God’s Holy Word have been featured in all the news media reports this week. Doubtless many people are confused about matters that pit long-standing beliefs against modern ideas. I found for myself that the following poor attempt at poetry sort of captured some of my feelings.

We learned in church last Wednesday night
How Elijah led a courageous fight
Against false gods who promised much
But failed to send the fire and such.
On top of Mount Carmel Elijah prayed
And God sent fire without delay
Convincing the people that He was real
And giving parched land His promise to heal.
The revival faded when the people went home
They forgot God and began to roam
Into temples of idols where sin did abound.
They covered their ears at the warnings’ sound.
They went their own way to the pleasures of sin
They loved them so much they forgot about Him
Who called to them daily amidst the din
Of the sounds of the world they were living in.
He called and He called. They refused to hear.
He finally stopped calling. They had cause to fear
For God sent his judgment, and the enemies came
To capture some, kill some, and put all to shame.
I wonder, when I think of the news of today,
Are we testing God’s patience as we go our own way?
Is there a limit to His mercy and grace?
Will He let loose His wrath upon this great place?

Read about all this in I Kings and II Kings in the Bible. [And yes, I wrote this (as if you couldn’t tell)]
