“I don’t care what anybody thinks. I’ll do as I please.”
Have you ever said that?
If you are a Christian, then before you say that again, perhaps you need to review what Jesus said about our influence upon others. He said, “You are the light of the world—like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden. No one lights a lamp and then puts it under a basket. Instead, a lamp is placed on a stand, where it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father” (Matthew 5:15-16 NLT).
The inescapable fact is that many people pay attention to what we say and do as Christians. If our faith seems important to us then they may become more interested in having a faith of their own.
I guess it just boils down to this for us: we have an influence, whether we want it or not; people are observing us and the way we live.
I think most of us would like to think that we are a good influence upon others. We’re not perfect people, and we know that, but we need to be growing in our faith, desiring to become more like Jesus every day. As Jesus said, we need to let our light shine so that others will want to know God, whom we love and serve.
