UNLIKELY SAINTS 1 CORINTHIANS 1:1-9
INTRODUCTION: The church in Corinth was beset by many problems,
yet the members were called “Saints.” Christians today are “saints”
also.
I. WHY ARE WE CALLED, “SAINTS?”
1. Because we are saved
2. Because we are sanctified
3. Because we are righteous in Christ.
II. WHY DON’T WE ACT MORE SAINTLY?
1. Because we have not made a clean break with our past.
2. Because we allow the world to influence us.
3. Because we listen to the wrong people.
III. HOW CAN WE BECOME MORE SAINTLY?
1. By staying close to the Lord.
2. By using our gifts as God directs.
3. By remaining ready for His coming.
CONCLUSION: In Christ we are saints. God loves us. Let us love
Him, stay close to Him, serve Him, and watch for Him to appear at
any time.

EMPTYING THE CROSS OF ITS POWER 1 CORINTHIANS 1:17
INTRO: The Cross is the power of God and the wisdom of God, but it
may be emptied of its power.
I. THE CROSS MAY BE EMPTIED OF ITS POWER
WHEN HUMANS ARE GLORIFIED INSTEAD OF CHRIST
1. When our personalities overshadow the message (vv 10-17)
2. When our words overshadow the main message (2:1)
3. When our ways overshadow the message (2:12)
II. THE CROSS MAY BE EMPTIED OF ITS POWER
WHEN A HUMAN MESSAGE REPLACES THE GOSPEL
1. Human messages can be substituted for the Gospel (vs 17)
2. Human messages can be harmful (Galatians 1:9)
3. Human messages should yield to Gospel proclamation (Romans 1:16)
CONCLUSION: Let us not allow self-interest to hinder our .
proclamation of the Gospel Let us never preach a substitute
message. Let us resolve, like Paul, to preach Christ crucified,
the power of God and the wisdom of God.
