April 30, 2020 (Thursday)
Today is National Honesty Day.
After writing a book entitled, “The Book of Lies,” M. Hirsh Goldberg, former press secretary to a Maryland governor, created this day because he felt the need for ending April on a high moral note since it begins with April Fools Day.
The Ten Commandments feature a commandment to be honest when accusing anyone of anything (Thou shalt not bear false witness). Actually every commandment presumes honesty. Dishonesty goes hand in hand with false worship, disobedience to parents, adultery, theft, murder and all the rest.
Ex convicts tell us that the one unforgivable sin in prison is to lie. Speaking truth and being honest with what you say and do are requirements for avoiding a beating or worse. Too bad we can’t enforce those virtues in the free population where legal documents must be signed to assure compliance with agreements.
People who believe in honesty need to be wise in their choice of words. Even if a rumor about another person is true, there is probably no need to repeat the rumor.
A preacher boarded a city bus and when he took his seat, noticed that the driver had given him too much change. It was only a penny, but when he got off the bus at his stop, he gave the penny back to the driver, telling him that he gave the preacher too much change. “I know it,” said the driver, “but I heard you preach on honesty last Sunday and I wanted to see if you practice what you preach!”
To be totally honest, there are few rules for this special day……just be honest.
LET OTHERS SEE JESUS IN YOU
B. B. Mckinney
1924
While passing thro’ this world of sin,
and others your life shall view.
Be clean and pure without, within;
Let others see Jesus in you.
Let others see Jesus in you,
Let others see Jesus in you.
Keep telling the story, be faithful and true;
Let others see Jesus in you.
Your life’s a book before their eyes,
They’re reading it thro’ and thro’
Say, does it point them to the skis,
Do others see Jesus in you?
Let others see Jesus in you,
Let others see Jesus in you.
Keep telling the story, be faithful and true;
Let others see Jesus in you.
Then live for Christ both day and night,
Be faithful, be brave and true,
and lead the lost to life and Christ.
Let others see Jesus in you.
Let others see Jesus in you,
Let others see Jesus in you.
Keep telling the story, be faithful and true;
Let others see Jesus in you.
While passing thro’ this world of sin,
and others your life shall view.
Be clean and pure without, within;
Let others see Jesus in you.
Let others see Jesus in you,
Let others see Jesus in you.
Keep telling the story, be faithful and true;
Let others see Jesus in you.
