Let Go

March 17, 2020 (Tuesday)

A man collected loose pennies and put them in a jar. His three-year-old son found it and thrust his hand into the jar to pick up a penny. But something was wrong; he could not remove the hand that clutched the penny. He tried and tried, to no avail. Finally he started crying. About that time, his father showed up and asked why he was crying. “I can’t get my hand out of the jar,” he moaned. “Son,” said the father, “just let go of whatever you have in your clenched fist.” So the boy let go and easily removed his hand.

Perhaps there are people reading this who are holding on to something that they need to let go. They can’t be truly free because they refuse to let go of whatever is holding them back.

Maybe it’s something they are doing that they know is wrong.

In other words, they are being held back in life because of sin that they won’t let go.

I’m reminded of “Christian,” the lead character in the book, “Pilgrim’s Progress,” who goes through life with a heavy burden on his back that he wants removed. But he cannot find anything that helps until he comes to the old rugged cross and the sight causes the burden to be severed from its attachment to his back, then falls into a deep chasm never to be seen again. The book is an allegory about all our efforts to save ourselves and how we finally come to our Savior who takes away our burden of sin.

I like the words of an old chorus, “Things are different now, something happened to me, since I gave my heart to Jesus.”

At the close of each Tuesday blog I write about the presidents, in the order of their service.

Today’s president is
