Land that I love
November 3, 2010 (Wednesday)
The polls opened yesterday, and Americans had their say. I didn’t see a policeman or a soldier near the ballot boxes where I voted. That’s the way we do it here in a country where government is of the people, by the people, and for the people. Whether we like the results of the election or not, the process of voting was available to all Americans and we will live with the results. The people have spoken.
The baseball season is now over also. Teams from the two leagues have battled to the finish and the San Francisco Giants came out the winner of the World Series. The Texas Rangers made all of us proud by being competitive all the way through the process. Throughout the playoffs and the final series, we were treated to the singing of “God Bless America” by various singers. One of those singers was 84-year-old Tony Bennett. That was a special thrill for me and a lot of folks like me who really appreciate a great song by a great singer sung in a great way.
The write-up about Bennett made mention of the fact that he will be presenting shows all across the country this year. More power to him. I hope he can keep on singing for years to come. He’s a great example and inspiration to older people of all walks of life to “keep on keeping on.”
Billy Graham has reached his 90th birthday and has had many health problems in recent years. He was quoted as saying, “No one ever taught me how to get old.” We wish the very best for him. His coworkers are up in years also. Bev Shea is one hundred years old and can still sing well. People like this teach us by their example never to give up.
If you are up in years, you need one of those bumper stickers that brags, “I’m chronologically gifted!”
